March
Granny Marta's Day 1st March is a special day in Bulgaria as this is when Granny Marta's (Grandmother March) day is celebrated. This day symbolises nature's rebirth for the end of winter and the beginning of spring. This day is also celebrated in nearby Romania.
March is considered to be the only female month of the year in Bulgaria and can have strange weather conditions.
The day is celebrated by giving friends and family a tassel made of red and white wool which is called a martenitsa. This is a token of health, good luck and the arrival of spring. During March you will see thousands of martenitsi in trees and bushes which should be hung on a twig in bloom for good luck.
